A baby girl
who was afraid
of blowing away
was welcomed
to the world
just after Christmas,
on Boxing Day.
She joined her brothers
For games and play
she fitted right in
like she’d always been,
with Disney eyes,
long blonde hair,
and a smile
that was noticed
everywhere.
This little girl
would look so deep
into every soul
she’d ever meet.
She seeks beneath people’s masks,
Underneath their daily tasks.
Smart and kind,
beyond her years
and a heart far bigger
than all her fears.
She was three
Seated alongside
a dying bumblebee
until its end
until it could no longer see.
“A misunderstood creature
of its kind,” she said,
“I’ll stay with it until it’s dead.”
This young girl
had many fears
a giant acorn fully grown,
tidal waves, clowns, things unknown.
Superstition passed on by peers.
Holding inside all her tears,
Quietly internalised, all those years
She feared her brothers
may grow up and stray,
leaving her behind, far away.
As her brothers grew older,
she grew faster, taller
as if it were all she could do
to keep up to their shoulders.
She did not know it any longer
but her bond with her brothers
had only grown stronger.
She would never be alone,
wherever they’d grown,
whatever the change,
no matter the weather.
When the wind blew,
she thought she
might blow away.
She’d say,
“Hold my hand tight,
so that I can stay.”
Please, Mum,
don’t let me
blow away.
